The M9 is a lightweight, semi-automatic pistol produced by Beretta and designed to replace the M1911A1 .45 caliber pistol and .38 caliber revolvers. The Beretta M9 has automatic safety features that help prevent accidents.

Beretta 92fs: Best Military Sidearm?
Currently there are at least 200,000 SIG Sauer M17 and M18 pistols in service with the US military. SIG won the XM17 Modular Handgun System competition to replace the Beretta M9 in 2017. Critics called the size and weight of the Beretta a disadvantage. They felt that the M9 could not adjust to different hands. It can also be disabled.
Sometimes we forget that the M9 was born for a specific reason and history: the obsolete M1911. It's only seven or eight rounds. This is where the Beretta M9 came into being. It fires the 9mm round which is distributed in NATO. It has a 15 round magazine. And some believe it is less than the M1911.
Below is a history of the Beretta M9 and why the US military decided to go the other way after years of faithful service. History of the Beretta M9
The M9 is a military version of the Beretta 92FS. The Italian designers wanted an improvement on the Beretta 92. The original 92 was based on the model and best-selling Beretta Model 1951 Brigadier which was developed after the Second World War by World. In 1975, Italian special forces used the 92FS with the Brazilian military.

By 1978, the Americans were testing a new pistol program called the Joint Services Small Arms Program. This was designed to carry over from the popular M1911. The competition included Heckler & Koch, Fabrique National (FN), Walther, and Smith & Wesson. Colt tried again to score. The DOD wanted exceptional security, easy magazine loading, and good retention.
The Beretta 92FS survived other competitors in the first test conducted by the Air Force. However, the Army did not agree with what the Air Force found, citing problems with the investigation records. The Navy had no problem with the Air Force testing and went ahead and bought the Beretta.
But the army was undeterred and ordered a second test in 1983. It also ran into problems and the Joint Services Small Arms required another test in 1984 between the Beretta 92 SB-4 (e by then, Beretta had made improvements to the 92FS..) and the SIG Sauer P226. The Beretta 92 SB-4 won out, due to its lower cost, and was renamed the Beretta M9. But the M9 has proven itself to be a tough weapon that has passed tests in salt water, hot temperatures, drops and burials in mud and snow. The military immediately ordered more than 315,000 guns at a cost of about $75 million.
Using an Italian company ruffled some feathers because an American company never won, but the Beretta M9 was made in an American factory in Accokeek, Maryland. The M9 had its first round of bad luck that caused the first critics. A member of SEAL Team Six, who showed off the gun to a visitor in 1986, was injured in an accident. The gun went off and hit him in the face. That's when the SEALs turned to the SIG P226. Use Long Service and Update Models
But the M9 continued to be used by the rest of the US military especially in Operation Desert Storm and the Global War on Terror in Iraq and Afghanistan. Beretta listened to the critics and updated the M9 to the M9A1 in 2006 with an accessory rail, a better magazine, and a new cover for dry and dusty environments.
Despite the improvements, the M9A1 still has its flaws, according to some users. The gun was on the heavy side and the grip could not fit both hands. The .45 ACP round did not have the stopping power of the M1911. On the other hand, the SIG M17/18 uses improved bullets. Does the military need a new gun?
Security analysts believe the American Security Project is an example of government waste. The new pistols, they argued in a report, were not always needed when it came to war. The weapons are "last" weapons that usually don't turn a war into a war because they aren't used like guns, according to the policy institute. Tricks don't become new because of guns.

To the critics who complained about the suspension of the force, the American Security Project said that it can be solved with good gun training. And reliability complaints can be caused by poor maintenance.
However, the M9 was also long in the tooth. It is time to make a change as the military moves into conventional warfare with powerful competitors. Competition always produces better weapons. The SIG Sauer M17/M18 faced early problems such as accidental discharges from its special model (the P320), but the manufacturer says these issues have been resolved. Many believe it is time to replace the military with another handgun.
