FORT STEWART, Ga. -- Fort Stewart and Winn Community Hospital took another step forward in treating soldiers during the Nov. 3 official opening of the Warrior Recovery Center. The center is located behind the Winn emergency room in buildings 357 and 359.

Military Matters: Community Supports Fort Stewart Soldiers As They Prepare For Deployment

The new two-building clinic primarily deals with soldiers suffering from traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder and chronic pain. According to WRC Senior Captain Jessica Parker, the clinic is a private clinic and is available by appointment only.

Brigadier General Bryan Gamble, deputy commander of the Southeast Regional Health Command and Dwight D. Eisenhower Medical Center at Fort Gordon, said senior Fort Stewart leaders, including Brig. "It (WRC) focuses on the invisible wounds of war: PTSD, concussions and other behavioral health problems," said Col. Cordts. "These two buildings will focus on the wounds we don't see; they pay due attention to the fact that, like physical wounds, they can be debilitating."

The center offers more intensive and symptomatic treatment for soldiers, treating them with alternative medicine as well as traditional treatment methods.

"What's important at the WRC is that they focus on holistic medicine—recognizing that not all of a soldier's illness and injury can be treated with a pill," says Col. Kordts. "Here, soldiers can be treated with other types of treatment, including alternative therapies. This building systematically recognizes that behavioral health is as important as physical health."

One alternative treatment used to treat WRC is a virtual training simulation used to help soldiers recover. Simulators include a simulated gun turret and humvee convoy simulation.

"While soldiers are recovering, these (simulators) are a way to create a controlled environment that helps them recover," said WRC neuroscientist Mick Hoffstetter. "The main goal is to improve the soldiers so that they can return to the service." According to Allmon, the Soldier Center is the first place a soldier sees at Fort Stewart and the last place they see when they retire, permanently transfer or leave Fort Stewart at the end of a tour of duty.

"When a Soldier first arrives at Fort Stewart, pretty much everything is done here," Allmon said. "Every day here is the Soldier's "first day".

Currently, Fort Stewart has an eight-day processing schedule compared to the normal IMCOM standard of five days. Stewart changed to a longer one in 2003, when soldiers deployed to the 3rd Infantry Division deployed as part of a rapid surge, Allmon explained.

The Soldier Service Center is also a "hub" for processing Soldiers. It usually takes about 60 days for a Soldier to process orders and requires an appointment to a Soldier Service Center within 30 days of their dispatch date. Within 30 days until processing is complete, the Soldier Service Center will send an automatic list of each Soldier to each agency and certain fields will be automatically deleted, saving the Soldier time and speeding up the process.

"If a soldier is being processed, this is where they come," Allmon said. He added that there may be a few more stages to the process, but most of the work is done in the building.

One thing many people don't know that the Veterans Service Center offers is retired service. There they prepare DD214 forms - Certificate of Discharge or Discharge from Active Duty - showing the individual's entire military career. Any veteran can visit the Soldier Service Center office with any DD214 issues.

The Soldier Service Center hosts CPAC, where all civilians attend a processing orientation when they begin work at Fort Stewart. CPAC also provides employment information for Fort Stewart and Hunter Airport.

Family members, pensioners, civilians and entrepreneurs also come to the Center when they need to register a vehicle, need a new or replacement ID or joint access card.

If you need a passport, DOL issues them at the Soldier Service Center, Allmon said. Balfour Beatty Communities has a cell at the center that hosts soldiers being processed on base, and soldiers can turn on power and sign up for internet service at the center, among other things.
