NEWLAND - Newland grocery shoppers will have one less shopping option at the end of April as the Lowes grocery store on River Street is set to close its doors permanently April 29.

The store has been serving the community since the mid-1980s and currently employs 29 people, including 10 full-time employees and 19 employees.

According to a press release from the company Lowes, while some employees will be able to move to places near Tynecastle or Boone, those who cannot move will be given financial assistance during the transition period.
"We regret that these decisions will affect our store members, their families and our guests at these locations," the statement said. "If possible, our members will be notified at Lowes Foods and JustSave stores. If it is not possible locally, we will provide financial assistance to help them."
The store closings, along with four other stores in Pilot Mountain, Murfreesboro, Sparta and Louisburg, were described in the release as part of "ongoing restructuring of their overall store mix as part of broad growth plan to invest in new stores and continue to focus. maintenance stores."
